Arts & Culture

You might be surprised to learn that New York City’s rich history and legacy overlaps with that of Riverdale. Some of the city’s most famous names lived in Riverdale.

For starters, Wave Hill has been the home of American icons such as Mark Twain and Theodore Roosevelt. Built in 1836, the Greek Revival Manor hosts a botanical garden, art galleries, and live performances. The nearby Van Cortlandt house is the oldest house in the Bronx and was used by George Washington as a base during the American Revolutionary War. Now a museum, the house boasts a collection of furniture and art including heirlooms of the Van Cortlandt family.

The Henry Hudson Monument towers over the Henry Hudson Park and was built to commemorate the English explorer who the historic river is named after. Finally, Bell Tower Park offers a historic experience like none other. The Memorial Bell Tower was built in 1930 to commemorate World War I veterans from Riverdale, Spuyten Duyvil, and Kingsbridge.

Sports & More

Van Cortlandt Park is also home to sporting and recreational facilities available to Riverdale residents. These include biking and running paths, cricket fields, and Mosholu Golf Course. In addition, Gaelic Park is home to Manhattan College Jasper’s lacrosse, soccer, and softball teams which provides an opportunity to spectate many high-level sporting events.
